 TODAY'S ALGOMA FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Algoma Fire Department and Rescue Squad has a long history dating back to 1874. A year after the
" Ahnapee " now Algoma was incorporated as a village in 1873.  The first members were a proud group serving the area with a single hand
pumper and
hose cart that was used from 1875 to 1908.

From that meek start in 1874 the department has grown to a very well equipped and professionally trained Fire & Rescue Unit.  We serve about 66 square miles in Northeast Kewaunee County. Our service is to the City of Algoma as a primary and then " Ready to Serve " contracts with the Town of Ahnapee, Town of Lincoln and the Town of Pierce. The Town of Ahnapee does own two units of their own that we house in our station at 400 Third St. in the City of Algoma.

We have within our service area about 7 miles of DNR Nature Trail.

We cover about 9 miles of Lake Michigan shore line and on occasion do assist the U. S. Coast Guard with fire fighting and water rescue.

Activities & Operations

The Fire Department members meet twice a month on the First and Third Thursday for training and meetings.

During these training sessions there is in house instruction and some live fire practice.

We strive to keep current on all the new techniques and fire operations.

Our department has a State Certified Instructor on staff and that is a great help to the level of training that we receive.

The Department maintains the importance of Volunteerism along with a strong commitment to family. Each year we hold a Christmas party for the children of our members. This is a truly a special time for the members and their families.

This party is put on by our " Ladies Auxiliary " that assist with other functions throughout the year as well.

After the Christmas / New Years Holiday weekends the members of the department do a Annual Christmas Tree Lift. This is another time for the members to give back to the community for the support they have show us throughout the year.

Our retired members have been seen pulling the old hand pumper....

and the Chief has been seen cruising with the Diamond T.

Along with Training and Family activities the department takes pride in its heritage by preserving and displaying it's older equipment.
