2020 Candidacy & Nomination Paper Timeline

We’re starting to think about elections at City Hall!  Next year will be a busy year with four elections.  December 1st is the first day for candidates to circulate nomination papers for the 2020 Spring Election.  Ballot access documents can be found on our website in the Document Center and are also available at City Hall.  Candidacy paperwork and nomination papers are due back to me no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 7th.  Any incumbents not seeking re-election are required to file a notification of non-candidacy no later than Friday, December 27th.

This year the following individuals will need to seek re-election if they wish to continue in their position:
Mayor - Wayne R. Schmidt
1st District - Kevin Schmidt
2nd District - Scott Meverden
3rd District - Eugene Cleveland
4th District - Jake Maring

Mayoral candidates require 50 signatures.  Alderperson candidates require 20 signatures.  It is wise to obtain a couple extra signatures because once the nomination papers are turned in, they are cross referenced with any other nomination papers turned in for the same office and if there are duplicates only the set of papers that the individual signed first will count.  Also for alderperson,  signatures by residents that don’t reside within your district will be eliminated.

Important dates leading up to the election:
- 12/1/19 – First day for candidates to circulate nomination papers for the 2020 Spring Election
- 12/27/19 – Deadline for incumbents not seeking re-election to file Notification of Non-candidacy
- 1/7/20 – Deadline for candidates to file nominations papers, declarations of candidacy, and campaign registration statements
- 2/18/20 – Spring Primary (if needed)
- 4/7/20 – Spring Election
