2023 Tree Planting Program - Urban Forestry Grant

With the unfortunate, but necessary, number of trees in the City that have been, and still require, removed/removal in the City tree lawns, beginning in 2023, we will be initiating a Tree Planting Program within the City of Algoma. In this program the Public Works Department, through the Public Services Manager, would take requests from taxpayers who would like a tree planted on their property. With this list City crews, or contractors provided by the City, would acquire the tree, dig the hole, and plant the tree on private property at no cost to the property owner.

Residents who had a tree or trees removed from the front of their property would have first privileges to a tree being planted on their property by this program. The number of trees that one property owner would receive could vary. The reasons for this are the number of trees removed from the area around their property, the size of the lot where trees would be planted, and/or the demand for trees throughout this program.

Requirements for tree planting:
• Location of the tree has to be approved by the Public Services Manager or Public Works Director
• The tree would need to be approximately 10 feet off of the City right-of-way. (Exceptions may be granted at discretion of the Public Services Manager or Public Works Director)
• Selection of tree to be made by property owner – only exception at this time is Maple Tree.
• Maintenance through the life of the tree would be the responsibility of the property owner. The tree is not owned by the City, no maintenance to the tree will be done by the City throughout the life of the tree.
